Billy Kreutzmann of The Grateful Dead makes his first musical visit to State Bridge (he did stop by last year while we were under construction)!

Bill Kreutzmann can barely contain his enthusiasm for
7 Walkers, the former Grateful Dead drummer’s new band with guitarist / vocalist Papa Mali, legendary New Orleans bassist George Porter Jr., and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard.

“I can’t believe how much fun I’m having playing with these guys!” says Kreutzmann, who never missed a gig in the Dead’s 30 years together. “We’re making art together and having the best time.”

One listen to 7 Walkers’ self-titled debut album (Response Records / November 2, 2010) and it’s easy to understand why Kreutzmann is so pumped. With nearly all of its songs co-penned by Papa Mali and longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, 7 Walkers is an electrifying hybrid of classic Bay Area rock and New Orleans funk. Kreutzmann calls it “swampadelic.”

7 Walkers formed in 2008 after Kreutzmann’s girlfriend tipped him off to Papa Mali. “She said, ‘You’ve gotta check this guy out,’ and she put one of his records on,” Kreutzmann remembers. “I listened and I said, ‘This cat’s for real. I love this music.’” A short while later, Kreutzmann and Mali – born Malcolm Welbourne in Shreveport, La. – met at an Oregon festival, hit it off immediately and found themselves jamming for hours. They quickly hatched plans to make more music together.

The original 7 Walkers lineup included bassist Reed Mathis, who performs on all of the album cuts except one. When Mathis returned to his regular duties with the Bay Area jam band Tea Leaf Green following the 7 Walkers sessions, Mali recruited Porter, a founding member of New Orleans’ iconic Meters. Hubbard, a friend of Mali’s who has worked with Willie Nelson for several years, was chosen to fill out the band on keyboards, trombone, and other instruments.

For both Kreutzmann and Papa Mali, 7 Walkers – whose name is borrowed from one of the band’s songs – is something of a dream come true. Kreutzmann has New Orleans in his DNA, literally – his mother was born there – and he’s always been partial to the city’s music. “I have a real feeling for that music and I get along with the folks down there really well,” he says. “This music comes from the Tchoupitoulas, the Mardi Gras Indian tribes. They’re playing tribal rhythms and somehow it connects with my spirit. Plus, I get to play with the number one New Orleans bass player.”

A breath of fresh air takes over State Bridge as the fall moves in and the air gets crisp and clear. The fishing is amazing this time of year as are the lazy floats down the Colorado River.

DeVotchKa makes their State Bridge debut…DeVotchKa recently took their celebrated live act across the globe, delivering spirited performances to audiences in places such as Istanbul, Belgium, and Poland. In Paris the band opened for Muse playing to massive crowds of 90,000. “To connect with a crowd of strangers in strange lands with your music is really a life altering experience,” singer Nick Urata explains. “When you are standing naked up there, in the clutches of an attention challenged audience, you find out immediately what works. And we wanted to capture some semblance of that knowledge on tape. And so we marched into the studio battle scarred but inspired – and this is where we ended up.”

Fan favorites ELEPHANT REVIVAL co headline this fresh event….Elephant Revival, neo-acoustic transcendental folk quintet from Nederland Colorado, is touring in support of their new album, ‘Break in the Clouds’ released on Ruff Shod Records, an independent label created by Chad Stokes of State Radio. The album was released regionally on Nov. 22nd 2010 with a full national release scheduled for June 14th 2011. ‘Break In the Clouds was produced by David Tiller of Taarka. Their sophomore effort expands upon the group’s multi–genre musical approach, threading together dynamic instrumentation and a diverse rhythmic sound while exploring the depths of all five of the groups’ gifted songwriters. The album debuted at #2 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart, and was featured as a new and noteworthy independent release. “Break In the Clouds,” was also the top album sold in Colorado for four weeks in a row, and top radio spins for a Colorado artist in Colorado for the month of January 2011.

KATLYN DAWN – with music as her companion, katlyn has lived on the beaches of kauai to the mountains of italy, creating, capturing and playing her melody.the pure simplicity of her lyrics conveys a story time tale of a woman’s experiences growing up in love. her laid back, island style strum will move you to sway with the ocean’s tide, while the mellow vibration of her tone implies there is still honesty in today’s pop music culture. katlyn’s poetic impressions paint a picture that is open to one’s own interpretations. she makes her journey our own as we ride the wave of life in love to the tune of her song.

BOND, Colo. — What’s SUP this Labor Day Weekend? Steer clear of the crowds and hit the Colorado River with State Bridge’s What’s SUP stand-up paddle gathering. Clinics, tours and rentals will be provided Saturday and Sunday with a pre-party around the bonfire Friday night. Music on the Main Stage will be provided by Andrew McConathy, Katlyn Dawn and Boneless on Saturday and Whitewater Ramble on Sunday.

“People are blown away at how thrilling and challenging it is. It’s a great workout and the river is such a dynamic environment. People are thrilled, and they can’t get enough,” said Javier Placer, owner of Gore Range Expeditions, which will be facilitating this weekend’s activities. “There are still going to be some decent rapids. They’re slower with longer breaks in the middle. It’s definitely going to be a good time.”

Stand-up paddling (SUP) is the latest craze to hit the river in Colorado. Originally performed in Hawaii as a means for fishing, the sport has been adopted by whitewater enthusiasts. While some take it to the extremes by sending it down class-4 rapids, State Bridge and the Colorado River provide an ideal, calm setting for beginners, as well as thrill-seekers looking for a choppier ride. Beginners will put in at Rancho Del Rio, which is very calm.

The sport-theme weekends are something patrons can expect more of next year at State Bridge, said venue promoter and stand-up paddler Scotty Stoughton.

“People love getting on the water and learning a new sport,” Stoughton said. “I became addicted to the sport spending time out here on the river. It helped me with some chronic injuries and tightens up the core. I’ve fallen in love with it, and State Bridge is just a really mellow, great place to learn.

Folk artist and YarmonyGrass promoter Andrew McConathy with be on hand Saturday night, along with Katlyn Dawn and Boneless, an electric ensemble made up by the guys from Laughing Bones.

Self-described as “High-Octane Rocky Mountain DanceGrass,” WhiteWater Ramble, playing Sunday, uses a simple recipe to craft it’s sound — bluegrass instrumentation, add drums and a boundary-less approach to grassing up everything from disco and house grooves to roots Americana. The Colorado-bred quintet combines the elements of mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar, upright bass and drums to explore the musical boundaries of multiple genres.

SUP Schedule Saturday and Sunday

Clinics: 9:30 a.m., Noon, 2:30 p.m.

Tours: 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m.

GET ON THE RIVER!

Clinics: The Sup clinics are 1hr intensives taught by ACA certified SUP Whitewater instructors. In the 1 hr period they will review everything from the basics to advanced paddling techniques. There will be buoys and courses set up to begin implementing all the tips and lessons that you learn.

Demos: Demos are boards that are there for you to test paddle around. There is no instruction, you just get out on the water and give it a quick try. The time on the boards may be limited if there is a long line of people who want to get on the water. Demos are first come first serve and the boards are restricted to being used solely at Rancho Del Rio.

Tours: The SUP Tour is where all the lessons and skills you learned in the flat water and paddling all season in the lakes and reservoirs come into play. We begin with 1.5 miles of light current before we encounter the rapids. Even though the flows have come down since earlier in the season, standing on a board through these rapids make for both a phenomenal and thrilling time! We go over more advanced paddling techniques as well as river safety and river running skills.

COSTS:

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday first and last clinics are sponsored by Confluence. Sunday the middle clinic is Confluence as well.

Saturday middle and Sunday first and last are sponsored by Alpine Quest.

SUP Clinics : 9:30, 12pm, 2:30 Meet at Rancho $15

SUP Tours: 10:30, 1pm, 3:30 Meet at State Bridge 30 min prior if you are not doing the clinic $85, if they paid for the clinic, the tour is $75.

Demos: 9am-5pm Free Rancho

PAPADOSIO is a four piece raging apparatus. The music has evolved from a rock/jam background to what it is today, which was can only be explained as electronic spiced jam. The live show is always more upbeat than down, unless, of course, it is a downtempo kind of night, which isn’t very often. This is a band that thrives in a live setting, so in order to appreciate the music full force, one must see it performed live. Improvisation, house, idm, jazz, rock, jam; it’s all here.

OCTOPUS NEBULA – As a band, Octopus Nebula seeks to create the kind of deep, multi-layered, psychedelic grooves that we, as individuals, have constantly sought but seldom found on our own musical journeys. Our writing is intended to convey the sound and emotion of a place…an experience…a time… It embraces many genres of music, conveying the essence of all without being a literal interpretation of any. In this process, we make a conscious effort to avoid the standard musical forms that have been exploited by so many other bands… no well worn blues, rock or pop formulas and no boring techno beats our listeners have heard a thousand times over. Instead of leading people by the hand through what they already know, we leave it to the individual to conjure up their own imagery, emotions, and experiences. It is a beautiful journey we are on, and we thank you for joining us.

BOND, Colo. — Celebrate the dog days of summer as the music rolls on at State Bridge. August 20-21 brings the inaugural Find Your Way Festival to the riverside amphitheater, featuring The Grouch & Eligh of Living Legends along with some of Colorado’s finest independent acts.

The festival will showcase a classic Rocky Mountain mix of live hip-hop and energetic rock at one of Colorado’s freshest, outdoor venues. State Bridge, outside Vail, is situated between snow-capped peaks and the rushing Colorado River. Fans are encouraged to camp overnight and enjoy what’s sure to be a one-of-a-kind Colorado festival.

A second day (Sunday) has been added to the festival featuring Frogs Gone Fishin’ and a rare acoustic set by MTHDS.

The Grouch & Eligh began their ascent as integral members of seminal hip-hop ground Living Legends. Known for captivating their listeners with down-to-earth and truthfully poignant raps and production, The Grouch & Eligh have rocked with fans around the world. Instrumental in the creation and nurturing of the 1990s’ do-it-yourself hip-hop vibe, The Grouch and Eligh have built a reputation of honesty in music that still serves as a launching point for great shows nationwide.

MTHDS, A Vail-born, youthful band that combines funk-driven rock and melodic hip-hop to create an incredibly unique concert experience, will be setting the tone for the festival. In other words, fans can expect Music That Heightens Different Senses (MTHDS). Formed in April of 2007, “The Methods,” as they’re more widely known, were drawn together by a love of music and snowboarding and began playing to world-class athletes, tourists, ski bums, gnarly shredders, hipsters, slizzes and confused drunk weirdos that accidentally wandered in to various shows. The local buzz is immense, and one thing is for certain: Everyone leaving a MTHDS show is covered in sweat, hollerin’ at chicks and wondering where the night will take them next.

Following The Grouch and Eligh for the late-night performance is Kinetix, which to the uninitiated, is a band unlike any act in the Colorado music scene. Simply put, fans that see them, love them. Kinetix’s immutable energy is their calling card, and as such, the band has carved out a reputation of performing thrilling late-night shows. Voted Denver’s Best Rock Act of 2011, they combine top-tier live instrumentation with two lead vocalists, taking audiences from rhythm-and-funk and balls-out rock to eerie, spacey jams. Kinetix will be playing to the late-night crowd at Find Your Way for a must-see set along the river.

Easier experienced than described, Air Dubai is a bustling seven-piece group hailing from Denver’s burgeoning music scene. With disparate musical backgrounds and indiscriminate influences, the boys of Air Dubai have truly created something new — pure, melodic cacophony. The band is as hot as it comes in Colorado, collecting several titles, including Westword Magazine’s Best Hip-Hop Band, and KTCL 93.3’s Hometown for the Holidays competition, as well as universal praise for their eclectic brand of spicy alternative music. Yet while their impressive roster of accomplishments would suggest that Air Dubai might be seasoned veterans, the truth is quite the opposite: This young band has the world ahead of them.

Headlining the second night of Find Your Way, Frogs Gone Fishin’, a heavy-hitting rock band with a signature improvisational twist. In the age of auto-tuned vocals and laptop superstars, it’s great to find a hometown band that relies on harmonies, strong melody and dynamic rhythms to keep fans coming back. On any given night, the Frogs cut across genres and material from their two albums and never play the same set-list twice. This diversity in song choice and explosive improvisational energy has earned the band enthusiastic and devoted fans from cities all over the country.

BOND, Colo. — Donna the Buffalo’s feel-good, groove-oriented, danceable and often socially conscious music began over twenty years ago with roots in old time fiddle music. That evolved into a soulful electric Americana mix infused with elements of cajun/ zydeco, rock, folk, reggae, and country.

Donna the Buffalo is known for touring the country and remaining fiercely independent as one of the industry’s most diverse roots music bands.

“Donna the Buffalo is in the enviable position of being a homegrown entity, a group that finds itself outside the coloring lines of the accepted formula, a formula that is now in the past tense. … People doing what they love, and better, sharing that passion to the benefit of the public, is the strongest business formula ever written,” wrote the Nashville Scene.

The dynamic songwriting tandem of vocalists Jeb Puryear and Tara Nevins has penned over 150 songs in their collaboration with DTB. As of late, Nevins and Puryear have also been known to perform as a duo on air and at live shows, presenting their favorite DTB songs in stripped down arrangements for fans.

Donna the Buffalo is currently recording in Athens, Ga. with John Keane (R.E.M., Widespread Panic) on its 10th album. The band has released nine albums and have been affiliated with several others, including a Puryear’s solo album “Hopes and Dreams” and “Wait Til Spring” with Jim Lauderdale. DTB’s 2008 release Silverlined rose to No. 8 on the Americana Music Chart.

Co-bandleader and American roots traditionalist Tara Nevins, released “Wood and Stone,” showcasing her ever-evolving repertoire as she journeys back to her roots, while exploring new territory. “Her music takes on the spirit of the [Levon Helm] Barn like a well-worn and cozy Gypsy jacket that was tailored to her shoulders,” said Jambands.

Over the years and through their travels, Donna the Buffalo has had the opportunity to collaborate and record with musicians such as Jim Lauderdale, Preston and Keith Frank, Bela Fleck, Mamadou Diabate, Claire Lynch, David Hidalgo, The Duhks and Amy Helm. They are well known for their on stage collaborations in the festival community, often inviting musicians from all walks to perform.

Donna the Buffalo’s fervent fan base, self-named The Herd, which follows the band with zeal and has created a unique and supportive community at DTB shows across the nation.

“The main thing I like to say about The Herd is that you don’t have to do anything to be a member,” Puryear said. “You just have to like a song.”

“It’s a great feeling to promote such a feeling of community, like you’re really part of something that’s happening, like a movement or a positive force,” Nevins said. “All those people that come and follow you and you recognize them and you become friends with them — you’re all moving along for the same purpose. It is powerful. It’s very powerful, actually.”

Dark Star Orchestras shows are built off the extensive catalog of the Grateful Dead. On any given night the band will perform a show based on a set list from the Grateful Dead’s 30 years of extensive touring or use the catalog of original songs and often played covers to create a unique set list for the show. This allows music fans both young and old to share in the experience. Dark Star Orchestra presents its critically acclaimed live show at esteemed venues from coast to coast and internationally. Grateful Dead classics are performed in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the players capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions.
Touring nationwide for eleven years to the tune of over 1800 shows since forming, the band’s determined commitment to “raising the Dead” has drawn national media attention.

Critics aren’t the only ones singing Dark Star Orchestra’s praises. Five original members of the Grateful Dead have played alongside DSO and have had this to say:

Precision is king with DSO; the band adapts their stage positioning, vocal arrangements, specific musical equipment and instruments to fit the era of the show they are performing. Following each performance the band announces the date and venue of the original performance. Dark Star Orchestra could dip into any incarnation of the dead at any of their shows, allowing fans to experience shows that happened long before they were born.
Doors: 9am Bar and Grill opens
Top stage music 2-5pm
Main Stage kicks off at 6pm
Cornmeal hits around 9pm

Formed over 10 years ago, Cornmeal has grown from humble beginnings into a nationally recognized live music institution. 10 years together is no simple task these days, especially when the last five have seen the band spending over half the year on the road. Heavily influenced by American roots and folk music, Cornmeal blends lightning fast tempos and impeccable harmonies into an unrivaled live performance that continues to expand upon the five-piece acoustic-electric groups’ vast musical repertoire. While steeped in the tradition of the past, Cornmeal continues to forge their own path, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. With a rapidly growing fan base and ever-evolving sound, Cornmeal challenges the recipe of the bluegrass sound and live performance.
In the beginning of 2010, Cornmeal released their first live album, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I, an album that pays tribute to the fans. For the first six years, Cornmeal performed each and every Wednesday in Chicago to small yet loyal crowds. Throughout the winters of 2007-2009, Cornmeal returned to Chicago to pay homage to that tradition. The album is for the fans as a thank you for all the years of dedication, for believing in Cornmeal, and for creating a wonderful community for them to come home to. The album was recorded live throughout the winter of 2009 at Martyrs’ in Chicago, IL. Unlike Cornmeal’s three previous albums, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I captures the band in its raw, intense format, bouncing through song after song of fast paced, fierce originals and extensive improvised jams that showcase the immense talent and connectivity that have gained them so much fan appeal from coast to coast.
With the release of their debut album “In The Kitchen” (2001 Livin’ Live records), Cornmeal secured its place as one of the top bands in its genre. 2003’s “Tales from Magic Stone Mountain” (Livin’ Live records) garnered much critical attention and became a staple on College and AAA top 10 lists throughout the country.
In May of 2006, Cornmeal released their third album, “Feet First”, which became proof positive that Cornmeal’s tenure on the road brought on an honest and mature sound. Produced by guitarist Kris Nowak and bassist Chris Gangi, “Feet First” features a strong confidence in songwriting, musicianship and the ability of this band to stylistically ride the fence and bring it back home without missing a step.
While playing a blend of high profile venues, jam-band and bluegrass festivals to thousands throughout the region, the band has shared the stage with such highly acclaimed national acts as THE DAVID GRISMAN QUINTET, JOHN HARTFORD, THE DEL McCOURY BAND, LITTLE FEAT, LEFTOVER SALMON, TONY RICE, YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND, DARK STAR ORCHESTRA, moe, SAM BUSH and UMPHREY’S McGEE.
